Our Aims

The aims of the network and a brief summary of how we work towards them

The network has three broad aims which direct our activities:

Aim 1 - To provide a network of support, shared ideas, knowledge and resources for theatre practitioners functioning in the role of dramaturg

Aim 2 - To explore the role, function and contributions of dramaturgs in the theatre process through practice, debate and collaborations

Aim 3 - To promote collaborative work practices involving dramaturgs by providing support and information to theatre practitioners and organisations engaging dramaturgs

We will achieve this by:

  • Bringing dramaturgs, literary managers, script editors and others with similar interests together.
  • Provide support to our members and others on professional issues around our practice.
  • Provide support and advice to people wanting to find out about working with, employ or train dramaturgs.
  • Organise events for dramaturgs as part of our Continual Professional Development programme.
  • Continually defining the role and the tasks of the Dramaturg in the UK.
  • Providing a quarterly newsletter on the network’s activity and dramaturgy related issues.
  • Arrange symposia and workshops around interesting and specialised aspects of the practice of the dramaturg.
  • Provide access to information and an interactive discussion forum via our website.
  • Collate interesting resources for dramaturgs.
  • Making information about practical dramaturgy more easily available through printed information, our website and appearing at conferences and other meeting points for theatre practitioners.
  • Providing access to individual members’ CVs on our website making sure people looking for a dramaturg will find one suitable for their project.
  • Developing resources used for outreach and educational purposes such as the ‘Dramaturgs/Directors toolkit’©.
